Beginning of the Year - Teacher Tools

So the school year is here ... your kiddos are starting to use their devices. YOU need something to help building their foundation ... what tools do you use?

First - just like with devices, trackpads, mice, & headphones - there is no right or wrong on this. We are providing suggestions and tips on what has worked for us and our groups of students and we believe it will work for you ... but be mindful of your students and the rules for your school/district.

Tool #1: Google
Google is a top choice for schools. The collaborative features are amazing. But that isn't the focus right now. Google is our top choice for littles because so many programs use the Google SSO (single sign on) as a way to sign in - and THAT is wonderful for littles. This is definitely a district decision - and we think it's a great one!

Tool #2: Mote
Mote is a must use tool for teachers of littles. Mote is an extension that provides teachers with the ability to record their voice and insert it into many of the Google files for students to click and listen. This provides wonderful support for those learning to read.

Tool #3: Canva
This tool is definitely more for your use than having students use it, although it's entirely possible for littles to use Canva. Canva has an extensive collection of templates and ideas for teachers for everything from lesson plans, calendars, newsletters, infographics, and so much more.

Tool #4: Screencastify
Another tool for teacher use, Screencastify allows teachers to make videos and then post them for your students and their families. This is a great way to support learning and allow students to watch a lesson over and over, as many times as necessary.

Tool #5: Wakelet
You might not readily think of Wakelet as a teacher tool, but it is a super easy and efficient way to collect resources. By either making several collections or using the various designs within a collection, resources and activities can be shared - with other teachers or even collections with students. (Imagine a collection of videos to support a current topic?)

Littles CAN and WILL use technology ... but how well? That's up to you. Talking with your grade level and future year teachers will also pay off if you can all agree to the same rules, procedures, and routines.

We have found there is very few things the "littles" can't do with devices. Give the proper time, patience, and scaffolding, and they CAN accomplish it!
